Maragani Venkata Ramana 's story

Maragani Venkata Ramana

Maragani Venkata Ramana is 52 years old and lives in the Krishna District.

She is married to a rice mill worker. The couple have one son who works as a lorry driver.

After five years of marriage, Maragani developed symptoms of lymphatic filariasis (LF), such as lymphedema - a chronic swelling of the legs which can be extremely painful. Over the past 20 years, she spent a large sum of money on her treatment and was eventually diagnosed at a private hospital.

Her uncle, who has leprosy, referred her to a Lepra-run self-support group where Maragani practised self-care and was supported to apply for disability benefits. As a result, Maragani hasn’t experienced any serious complications in the past three years. She is a strong peer educator, ensuring others affected by LF receive a pension and benefits they are entitled to.

Venkata Ramana now runs a small shop within her home and is an active member of her local community.
