Fulmanti

Fulmanti, aged 55, lives with her husband in India’s Jamui district and has been living with lymphatic filariasis (LF) for the past seven years.

The disease caused her leg to swell which affected her mobility and made it difficult for her to carry out daily activities to support her family.

In 2023, LEPRA Society’s ASPIRE project, run in partnership with global health charity Effect Hope, conducted a survey in Fulmanti’s village. It was then that she was introduced to self-care practices for managing LF, including regular limb hygiene, skin care, exercise, and other preventive measures.

With consistent guidance and regular follow-ups, her condition significantly improved. The swelling in her affected limb reduced, she experienced fewer episodes of illness, and her overall health and confidence improved. Encouraged by these positive changes, she became an active member of a local community-based group where people affected by LF meet for advice and guidance.

Recognising her commitment and empathetic qualities, the group appointed Fulmanti as a peer supporter. In this role, she actively participates in monthly meetings, encourages other members to attend regularly, and motivates them to practice self-care for effective disease management. She provides emotional support and practical guidance to people affected; helping them improve their quality of life.

Fulmanti also played an important role during the Government's Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign. She distributed educational materials within the community and visited nearly 50 households to raise awareness about LF, the importance of taking MDA medicines, and methods to prevent the disease. She encouraged community members to complete the prescribed medication and advised anyone experiencing side effects to seek care at the nearest health centre or consult the community health officer.

With support from Lepra Society, Fulmanti obtained her Unique Disability ID Card, which recognises her disability status. This enabled her to access a disability pension, providing much-needed financial support and improving her family's economic security.

Today, Fulmanti is a respected role model in her community. Her journey has inspired many others affected by LF to seek treatment, practice self-care, and actively participate in community health initiatives. She remains committed to helping others live healthier, more dignified lives.
