He earns a living by running a small shop.
In 2016, he developed a loss of sensation in his hands and feet. Due to the numbness, he unknowingly picked up injuries which developed into ulcers.
A year later, Yusuf was diagnosed with leprosy at a local hospital and prescribed a 12-month course of multidrug therapy.
However, during and after treatment he experienced recurrent inflammatory episodes caused by his immune response to the leprosy infection. These reactions can occur before or during treatment or even several years after completion.
Yusuf attended hospital on several occasions where Lepra staff closely monitored his condition. Through regular follow-up and treatment adherence support, his reactions gradually subsided.
Although the disease was cured, Yusuf later developed ulcers on his feet due to leprosy-related disabilities, making it difficult for him to walk and continue working.

Unable to earn a regular income, he struggled to provide for his family. Community stigma and discrimination further affected his emotional wellbeing, causing him to lose confidence and hope. He experienced depression and social withdrawal.
Lepra staff referred Yusuf for one-to-one counselling sessions along with family counselling which helped to improve communication, understanding, and emotional support.
Yusuf was able to share his fears and frustrations and learned that leprosy is a curable disease, not a curse. This support helped him to regain self-confidence and develop a more positive outlook on life.
Within four months, Yusuf’s ulcers improved significantly. Through wearing custom-made protective footwear and consistent self-care practices, he was able to walk more comfortably and resume daily activities. As his physical condition improved so did his mental wellbeing, enabling him to participate more actively in family and community life.
Over the past two years, Yusuf’s health has gradually improved. Lepra staff supported him to obtain disability allowance, and he used his savings to reestablish his shop.
The shop has become an important source of income for the family, helping Yusuf regain his independence, confidence, and sense of purpose while improving financial stability.
Today, Yusuf is mentally stronger, more confident, and hopeful about the future. His story demonstrates how with holistic support people affected by leprosy can overcome both physical and emotional challenges and rebuild their lives.
