His condition began with a fever and mild swelling in one leg, which gradually significantly worsened. Acute attacks left him bedridden and unable to run his shop, causing him financial worry. Despite spending a significant amount on treatment in different cities, he found no lasting relief.
Concerned that he may be contagious, Satya’s family and community members kept their distance from him. The isolation greatly affected his emotional wellbeing.
Satya’s situation finally began to improve when LEPRA Society staff carried out a survey in his village and identified his condition as LF. He was introduced to a community-based group under the ASPIRE project, delivered in partnership with global health charity Effect Hope. Here he learnt self‑care techniques and exercises to help manage his condition. He also received emotional support to rebuild his confidence and support to access a pension and benefits.
With regular self-care, Satya’s condition improved significantly. He was able to restart his small business and access benefits to help improve his financial situation.
Inspired by the support he received, Satya became a community volunteer, helping to raise awareness of the symptoms of LF and encourage people to take preventative medicine. In February, he personally reached 100 households!
Satya’s story demonstrates the power of community engagement not only in his personal recovery but also in raising awareness to others.
