Kusum's story

Kusum

Kusum, aged 46, lives in the Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh.

Along with managing household responsibilities, she supports her large eight-member family by undertaking daily labour and agricultural work.

Four years ago, Kusum’s leg became severely swollen, making it difficult for her to work. The physical discomfort also affected her emotional wellbeing. She frequently experienced anxiety, irritability, and feelings of helplessness because she was unable to earn consistently for her family. She also feared that her condition would continue to worsen.

When LEPRA Society staff from the Samarth Project visited Kusum’s village, they identified her symptoms as lymphatic filariasis (LF) and encouraged her to attend a self-support group. At that time, Kusum had very limited knowledge about LF and how to manage it.

During group sessions, Kusum received regular guidance on self-care practices, including washing, skin care, exercise, limb elevation, and the importance of managing acute attacks. With continuous encouragement from staff and peer supporters, she began practising self-care regularly and became more confident in managing her condition.

The emotional support she received through the group played an equally important role in her recovery. Interacting with other members facing similar challenges helped reduce her anxiety and feelings of isolation. She gradually regained confidence, her emotional health improved, and she developed a more positive outlook towards life. The group also helped address the stigma she had associated with her condition, enabling her to feel accepted and supported within her community.

Today, Kusum reports noticeable improvements in both her physical and emotional wellbeing. Regular self-care has helped her better manage the swelling in her leg, enabling her to participate more comfortably in household and farming activities. More importantly, she now believes that LF can be effectively managed with the right knowledge, consistent self-care, and community support.

Kusum's journey demonstrates how community-based support, peer counselling, and self-care education can significantly improve the quality of life of people living with LF. Her story reflects the positive impact of the Samarth Project in empowering people to overcome physical challenges, reduce stigma, and restore hope for a healthier and more dignified life.
