When Ram first noticed three pale patches of skin on his arms, he attended a local doctor, but they failed to diagnose his condition. As the skin lesions persisted, he became increasingly worried and stressed, uncertain about the nature of the disease he might have contracted. Ram also experienced ongoing low back pain, which made it difficult for him to work. The loss of income increased his emotional stress and insecurity.
After travelling to Delhi, he visited Indira Gandhi Hospital for further evaluation, where he was assessed and diagnosed with leprosy and prescribed a 12-month course of multidrug therapy.
Follow-on support was provided by LEPRA Society's Referral Centre. To aid his emotional recovery, Ram was given regular counselling which helped to improve his understanding of the disease and reduce his concerns. In addition, he received physiotherapy for his back pain and strengthening exercises to follow at home. This intervention significantly reduced his pain and improved his mobility. With ongoing treatment and care, his skin showed marked improvement and his back pain resolved, enabling him to return to work.
Looking ahead, Ram hopes to maintain good health, continue working without interruption, and remain free from disability or further complications. Thanks to early diagnosis, treatment and care, Ram has regained confidence and stability.
