Satish's story

Satish at the referral centre being fitted with protective footwear

Satish

Satish, aged 59, lives with his wife in Delhi. He works as a ‘Pandit’, a Hindu priest, a role which involves regular social and religious engagements.

When Satish felt a loss of sensation in his limbs, he didn’t think the symptoms were serious. Over time the numbness worsened, and he developed an ulcer on his foot that wouldn’t heal, he eventually attended Indira Gandhi Hospital in early 2026 where he was diagnosed with leprosy.

Due to the delay in his diagnosis, the disease had already started causing visible complications. Due to nerve damage, Satish experienced loss of function in his fingers and numbness in his feet along with an ulcer on his toe. Additionally, he is managing diabetes, which has further slowed the healing of his ulcer and increased the complexity of his condition.

The presence of visible disabilities and mobility issues led Satish to lack confidence in social settings which impacted his work, leaving him financially vulnerable and causing emotional distress.

Satish is currently undergoing multidrug therapy and regularly visits LEPRA Society's Referral Centre for ulcer dressing, hand exercises, and physiotherapy. With consistent care and treatment, his ulcer is now almost healed. He is receiving continuous medical support and guidance for self-care practices, which are gradually helping to improve his condition.

Looking ahead, Satish hopes to fully recover, regain physical ability, and resume his much-loved work. He aspires to live with dignity and financial stability.
