WHAT WE DO

Community Disability Care

We focus on neglected diseases such as leprosy and lymphatic filariasis, which if left untreated can cause life changing disabilities.

By not seeking treatment early, people affected by leprosy develop ulcers in their hands and feet. If these ulcers become infected and are left untreated, it can lead to permanent disabilities.

Lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, can cause frequent fevers and severe swelling in the limbs and genitals, which can quickly become infected.

Along with physical pain, enlarged limbs can mean reduced mobility, leaving people unable to work and earn an income.

Many people struggle to cope with the disabling consequences these diseases can cause, but there are simple solutions to ensure that people can care for their disabilities to get them back to work.

Self-care camps

We arrange self-care camps in the local community where people can learn how to care for their disabilities through cleaning and physiotherapy techniques that they can then do at home.

By conducting these camps in the community people gain a better understanding of the symptoms and treatment, greatly reducing the prejudice surrounding these diseases.

At the camps we invite people with disabilities to demonstrate to others how they can prevent infection and reduce the severity of their disabilities.

One of the ways they do this is by washing and soaking wounds on a daily basis. The chances of disability are greatly reduced by ensuring that wounds stay clean and free from infection.

Self-care kits

We provide basic kits to people free of charge so they can carry out self-care at home, without the need for regular visits to our referral centres.

These kits include a bar of soap, anti-bacterial ointment, cream to prevent fungal infections and a towel.

These self-care kits cost just £3. Last year we gave out over 2,200 to people with leprosy and lymphatic filariasis related disabilities.
