Arjun

38-year-old Arjun lives in a rural village in Mayurbhanj, Odisha with his wife, their four children and his father.

Working as a labourer, Arjun is the main breadwinner for the family.

Six years ago, Arjun experienced swelling and pain in the scrotum, which gradually worsened, affecting his ability to perform physical labour and causing him persistent discomfort. Unable to work effectively and provide for his family, Arjun experienced emotional distress and physical strain. Self-conscious and embarrassed by his condition, he isolated himself from his community. Unaware of the cause of his symptoms, Arjun’s family were concerned about the cost of potential treatment.

Arjun’s life changed when he was diagnosed with hydrocele, a complication of lymphatic filariasis (LF), after a Lepra screening programme.

Hydrocele causes fluid to collect around the genitals leading to extreme swelling. It is estimated that half of men infected with the neglected tropical disease of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in childhood will develop hydrocele in adult life.

Due to the social stigma surrounding the disease and concerns about the potential cost of surgery and travel for treatment, many men like Arjun delay coming forward causing their condition to worsen, risking potential complications such as infection and infertility.

Unlike many diseases and conditions, however, hydrocele can be cured through a straightforward surgical procedure, a hydrocelectomy, with a recovery period of as little as two weeks.

To help Arjun overcome the emotional impact of his diagnosis, he was referred for counselling and given the option of undergoing a hydrocelectomy. Though initially hesitant, Arjun agreed to the surgery.

Post-surgery, Arjun experienced a significant improvement in his physical health. His ability to work was restored, and he regained his independence and dignity. Grateful for the care he received, Arjun is now leading a healthier and happier life. He is hopeful about continuing to support his family without the physical limitations that once held him back.

£5 can provide a care kit to help men manage pain and swelling while they wait for hydrocele surgery.
