Umesh's story

Umesh

52-year-old Umesh lives with his wife and their two children in a small village in the Indian state of Jamui.

He earns a living by selling vegetables locally via his cycle van. It’s a physically demanding job that depends on his ability to walk long distances and push his vehicle through crowded streets.

When Umesh first noticed swelling of his legs, he chose to ignore it as he was afraid of the diagnosis but as the years progressed, he developed multiple skin folds and open wounds leading to infections. The pain and swelling made even basic movement a daily struggle. Repeated acute episodes not only affected Umesh’s physical health but also took a toll on his emotional wellbeing.

Recognising the severity of his condition, in August 2025 Umesh attended the Jamui Referral Centre. It was here that he was diagnosed with lymphatic filariasis (LF) and received counselling and practical support to help him understand his condition and the importance of practising self-care. He learnt hygiene practices and therapeutic exercises to manage his condition and was given a self-care kit.

It was the provision of custom-made, protective footwear that made the greatest impact on Umesh’s recovery. The shoes are specially designed to support people affected by LF, by reducing pressure on affected limbs and preventing further skin damage.

Within weeks, Umesh reported an overall improvement in his general health with less frequent acute attacks. The relief from skin irritation and pain enabled him to walk and push his cycle van without distress. Able to engage with people again in comfort, he had a renewed sense of confidence and self-worth.

Umesh described the footwear as “a blessing” that not only eased his physical pain but also uplifted his spirit. He now performs his vegetable-selling duties regularly, with improved energy and enthusiasm, ensuring a steady income for his family.

"I used to dread every morning, knowing the pain that awaited me. But now, with these shoes and the care I received, I feel like I’ve got my life back. I can walk, work, and smile again."
