Landmark Case Protects the Rights of People Affected by Leprosy

15 March 2023

In February, Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad of India’s High Court of Dehli, ruled to protect the rights of people affected by leprosy, which is being described as a potential landmark case in India.

The court was hearing a plea opposing the threatened eviction of people from a leprosy community in Dehli’s Tahirpur area.

The case ended in favour of the petitioner, with an important declaration which will help pave the way for greater dignity and respect for people affected by leprosy.

"This Court is in agreement with the Petitioner that leprosy affected persons are equal members of our society and discrimination against leprosy affected persons is clear violation of Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution of India."

For nearly 100 years, Lepra has fought against the long-held prejudice surrounding leprosy and championed the rights of people affected. It is our hope that such rulings will enable further social change, and help reduce health inequality for vulnerable communities across the world.
