Cyclone Montha Update from Andhra Pradesh

5 November 2025

From 28-29 October 2025, Cyclone Montha severely affected the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh with heavy winds and continuous rainfall.

The Government issued alerts to all coastal residents and relocated vulnerable families to rehabilitation centres to ensure their safety.

Bapatla, where the Bethany leprosy community is located, lies on the coastal belt and was one of the worst affected areas, suffering extensive damage. Many houses were partially damaged, leaving residents without shelter and necessities. The affected families struggled without proper food for nearly three days.

Due to the severe winds, electricity supply was disrupted. Families with young children faced additional hardships with no access to milk, drinking water, or other essential items. Community leaders contacted LEPRA Society requesting urgent support to meet their immediate needs.

LEPRA Society responded quickly to organise emergency relief items which were distributed to affected families by the Municipal Commissioner.

The relief support came at a critical time, as many people affected were already facing difficult socio-economic conditions. The cyclone further worsened their fragile living conditions, leaving them unable to access even basic necessities.

Community leaders conveyed their sincere gratitude to LEPRA Society for extending immediate humanitarian support to some of the most vulnerable members of society during this difficult period.
