Throughout our 100-year history, Lepra have driven the development of new medications, innovative treatments, and advanced approaches to providing specialist care to people affected by these diseases. This work includes ensuring free access to vital healthcare through mobile clinics, outreach programmes, and community-level support.
Our proactive case-finding strategy ensures early detection and treatment of leprosy, preventing irreversible damage and reducing disease spread. Through door-to-door screenings, trained teams identify symptoms and refer people for diagnosis and free multidrug therapy (MDT) treatment.
This evidence-led approach drastically outperforms commonly used reporting methods, detecting up to 300% more leprosy cases compared to traditional case detection campaigns, while utilising fewer human resources and reducing overall costs.
Put simply, more detection means significantly improving long-term health outcomes. This innovative and incredibly effective case detection work costs £1,000,000 annually to run, and last year allowed us to reach 61,215 vulnerable people with diagnosis, treatment and care.
The results from this approach are remarkable and truly life-changing. The only obvious next step at this pivotal moment is large scale investment into this proven healthcare approach.
