We think it’s important that children and young people are aware of the world around them.

That’s why for over 25 years we have been visiting youth groups to educate young people about the damaging effects of the world’s oldest and most neglected disease, leprosy.

Fundraising is a fun way for children to learn about some of the issues that affect their world and gives them the opportunity to learn that a contribution, however big or small, can make a huge difference.

Getting involved can also empower them as individuals and teach them valuable life skills such as literacy and numeracy, organisation, creativity and healthy living. By taking on a new challenge and fundraising for us, you’ll be helping to fight neglected diseases like leprosy and lymphatic filariasis and tackle the prejudice which surrounds these diseases.

How does the fundraising work?

Lepra will send you a comprehensive personalised presentation that can be shown to your youth group to mark the beginning of their fundraising. The presentation can be sent in a format to suit you (video file, or DVD) and will give the children the opportunity to be fully engaged and knowledgeable about the cause, which in turn should make fundraising all the more successful. You can request your personalised presentation through the Resource Library.

Fundraising Challenges and Activities

Once the presentation has been shown, why not take part on in one of the fundraising challenges listed below?

Hold a Socks & Sandals Day

Leprosy often damages the nerves in the feet, leaving people susceptible to injuries and ulcers. We provide protective custom-made sandals to help people to walk comfortably and without fear of injury. These simple sandals cost just £6 to make and help children return to school and adults rebuild their livelihoods. A Socks & Sandals Day is a great activity for workplaces, societies and schools, where participants are challenged to wear their most vibrant, brightly coloured socks and sandals for the day - creating a fun and colourful atmosphere, and the money you raise can help more people receive life changing footwear.

Take part in our Relay Challenge

Leprosy causes hands to become stiff and claw like, making it difficult to do simple daily tasks such as brushing hair, eating breakfast, getting dressed and writing. During this challenge the participants will have an opportunity to experience how limiting daily life is for someone with leprosy by attempting to complete several challenges such as writing while wearing tube grip/gloves to restrict hand movement.

Take part in our Taking Steps Challenge

Getting medical attention can be a huge challenge for many people with leprosy. Those who live in rural communities often have to travel great distances to reach their nearest medical clinic. This might mean walking for hours. With this challenge we encourage you to get active and see what distance you can cover over 2 weeks.
