Vemula Bharathi's story

Vemula Bharathi

Vemula Bharathi is 65 years old and lives in a village in Andra Pradesh, India.

She was married with three daughters, but her husband died over 20 years ago. Tragically, she also lost one of her children 10 years ago due to health complications.

Bharathi first developed symptoms of lymphatic filariasis in 2015 and spent a large sum of money on private treatment. One of the symptoms of the disease, lymphedema, can cause severe swelling with pain and fever. At the time, Bharathi was suffering two-three acute attacks per year. Her income wasn’t sufficient to pay for additional private treatment which left her in pain, lacking confidence and under extreme stress.

Bharathi is also diabetic and suffers from knee joint pain. Due to her health conditions, she can no longer carry out domestic chores and is totally dependent on her daughter, Kondamma who is herself being supported by LEPRA Society following an HIV diagnosis.

In 2016, Bharathi was supported by Lepra and attended a self-support group to help aid her physical, social and emotional recovery. With advice from the outreach team, she learnt to practice self-care at home. Bharathi now helps other people affected by LF to learn self-care techniques.

Lepra outreach workers visit Bharathi and Kondamma every month to monitor their ongoing health needs and provide advice and guidance. Staff supported Bharathi to apply for a pension and other benefits that she is entitled to.

With Income Generation Support, Bharathi and Kondamma have successfully set up a small community shop and live in rented accommodation next door. With Lepra’s support, Bharati is now managing her physical and emotional health and has financial stability.
