Sujola's story

Sujola

When 40-year-old Sujola developed discoloured patches on her skin, she ignored them hoping they would go away.

Seven years ago, she attended her local healthcare centre, and it was there that she was diagnosed with leprosy. She began a course of multidrug therapy treatment to cure her of the disease.

Sujola learned self-care techniques to help heal injuries and ulcers which had formed on her hands and feet. She was also encouraged to meet with Bizly, a ‘Mental Motivator’, a community volunteer who helps people affected by leprosy to overcome the emotional impact of their diagnosis. When Sujola met with Bizly, it was clear that she was struggling significantly with her mental health and she was referred for professional counselling.

“I’m really happy to have had this support. I feel more relaxed these days.”
