Shuvadra

60-year-old Shuvadra lives in Bangladesh and works in the tea garden alongside her daughter.

In 2022, she developed spots on her hand and a health worker suspected leprosy. Referred to a local health centre, Shuvadra was officially diagnosed and began a six-month course of multidrug therapy (MDT).

Due to her late diagnosis, Shuvadra developed a loss of sensation in her hands and feet. Unable to feel pain when walking, Shuvadra was unaware of injuries developing on her feet and ulcers forming.

Lepra staff encouraged Shuvadra to attend a self-support group where she learned self-care techniques and was issued custom-made protective sandals to aid the healing of her wounds.

Comprising of 10 people affected by leprosy, the group meet regularly to share advice and support. Shuvadra is thankful for the help the group has given her. When she meets others with symptoms, she alleviates their concerns.
