Ruplal

Living in India’s Jamui District, 60-year-old Ruplal earns a living from rearing goats and selling produce from his smallholding. He lives with his wife, their son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren.

Ruplal completed 12 months of multidrug therapy for leprosy 15 years ago but due to a delay in his diagnosis and treatment, developed anaesthetic feet making him vulnerable to unnoticed injuries. Due to loss of sensation to the bottom of his feet, Ruplal sustained multiple injuries that led to chronic ulcers on both soles. The severity of his condition left him bedridden, resulting in loss of mobility. His quality of life deteriorated significantly, and he was unable to perform routine activities or support himself financially.

Social workers referred Ruplal to Jamui's Referral Centre where he received regular counselling to help him overcome the emotional impact of his condition. He learnt self-care practices to help him manage his injuries and was a provided a self-care kit to continue using at home.

Rulpal was also given custom-made, protective footwear in multi-cellular rubber to offload pressure from ulcerated areas and promote healing. With consistent wear and regular self-care, Rulpal’s ulcers completely healed. When his mobility restored, he resumed his daily work and regained financial independence.

Ruplal’s recovery highlights the critical role of post-treatment care in leprosy management. The provision of protective footwear and self-care education not only healed his physical wounds but also restored his dignity and livelihood.

“I am free from ulcers and earning again. Lepra showed me the way, and protective footwear gave me my life back."
