Rekha

49-year-old Rekha lives with her husband and two children in a small village in India’s Jamui district, she works in a local grocery store.

When Rekha first experienced swelling of her legs she wasn’t sure of the cause and as her symptoms worsened, she became increasingly self-conscious of her condition and began to worry about how people in her community might treat her.

As seven years passed, the chronic swelling and open wounds led to recurrent infections with the symptoms severely impacting her mobility, daily activities, and overall quality of life. Her condition made even basic tasks like walking and household chores a painful ordeal. No longer able to work, the severity of the symptoms led to Rekha isolating herself from her community and a decline in self-esteem. Her friends and family became extremely concerned.

In October 2025, Rekha finally decided to seek help and attended a local referral centre where she was officially diagnosed with lymphatic filiarisis (LF). It was here that Rekha learnt self-care techniques to manage her condition and was provided with a self-care kit including antiseptic, bandages and hygiene essentials. She was also provided with regular counselling to help address the emotional impact of her condition. Crucially, she received a pair of custom-made protective footwear.

The introduction of protective footwear marked a turning point in Rekha’s journey. The shoes reduced friction and pressure on her legs, improving comfort while walking, enabling her to resume daily activities. Thanks to better support, they contributed to a significant reduction in the swelling of her foot. Not only did the shoes aid her healing but they also helped to prevent new injuries and minimised the risk of infection.

The special footwear helped Rekha to feel more confident and gave her a sense of dignity. She resumed her role at her grocery store, standing and serving customers with ease. Her personality blossomed as she reengaged with her community.

Rekha’s story is testament to how protective footwear can restore not just physical health but also emotional wellbeing and social participation.
