Neelam

In an Indian village in Lavkushnaga lives Neelam, a 38-year-old homemaker who was diagnosed with leprosy four years ago.

Neelam began multidrug therapy (MDT) but as she was unable to complete the course, painful ulcers developed on her feet, significantly limiting her mobility and daily activities.

The injuries meant that Neelam remained confined to her home, cut off from the local community. The stigma associated with her condition heightened her loneliness, adding to her emotional burden. The isolation and social pressure took a toll on Neelam’s emotional well-being. She struggled to see a path forward, feeling disconnected from both her community and her sense of self-worth.

Neelam’s journey toward recovery began when she was referred to a Self-Support Group (SSG). Encouraged to attend the meetings regularly, she slowly began to share her experiences and learn about self-care practices.

The SSG meetings became a lifeline for Neelam, where she gained valuable insights into managing her condition. Practical demonstrations and discussions empowered her to adopt proper self-care routines, which significantly improved her health.

Neelam received self-care aids and appliances tailored to her needs, enabling her to address the ulcers on her feet effectively. These tools not only eased her physical pain but also gave her the confidence to engage in daily life.

With encouragement from the block coordinator facilitating the SSG and her peers, Neelam began stepping out of her home. Gradually reintegrating into her community helped her to overcome social stigma and regain her sense of belonging.

By participating in SSG activities, Neelam has found a supportive network that values her contributions and encourages her growth. Her renewed confidence has helped her to rebuild relationships within her community.

Neelam’s involvement in the SSG has uplifted her emotionally, providing her with a sense of purpose and connection. She now approaches life with optimism and determination, setting an example for others facing similar challenges.
