Mr Pramanik's story

Mr Pramanik

Diagnosed with leprosy seven years ago, Mr Pramanik lives with his wife in Bangladesh’s Bogura district.

He initially developed an injury to his finger which became infected requiring hospital treatment. When he attended hospital, tests showed that he had leprosy. Doctors explained that the disease had caused damage to his peripheral nerves which created numbness in his hands and feet, leaving him vulnerable to injuries and infection.

Mr Pramanik also experiences sores on the soles of his feet which causes him significant discomfort while walking. To help ease the pressure, Lepra issued him with custom-made protective footwear. Wearing the shoes has helped his existing wounds to heal and prevented further injuries.

Already struggling with low self-esteem and signs of depression from years of financial hardship, Mr Pramanik’s emotional wellbeing was further impacted following his diagnosis. He began showing signs of severe anxiety, social withdrawal, and hopelessness. Isolated and without access to regular medical or psychological support, his condition worsened.

A community health worker referred him for professional counselling with follow-up support from a voluntary ‘Mental Motivator’. Rupali regularly visits Mr Pramanik at home providing emotional support and guidance on self-care practices including daily foot inspection, wound care and the regular use of protective footwear.

With consistent care, counselling, and participation in a peer support group, Mr Pramanik's physical symptoms improved and his mental health gradually stabilised. He now volunteers to help others in similar situations, using his experience to fight stigma and promote early treatment and emotional healing.
