Kushna's story

Kushna

A farmer from the Puri District of Odisha, 60-year-old Kushna lives with his wife, two sons, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.

20 years ago, his left leg became itchy, swollen and painful making physical work extremely difficult.

Struggling to support his family, Kushna was under financial strain. Self-conscious of his symptoms, he withdrew from social interactions and his mental health declined.

Kushna spent all his savings on multiple treatments but found little relief. His turning point came in February 2022, when he met Lepra staff who diagnosed him with lymphatic filariasis (LF). Referred to a local clinic, Kushna not only received treatment but also learnt self-care practices including exercises to alleviate his symptoms. With time, Kushna’s condition significantly improved but he was unable to return to physical labour.

With support from Lepra, Kushna received training from the district horticultural department on honey bee farming. Learning a new skill greatly improved his emotional health. Kushna is now a successful bee farmer and happy in his work and social life.
