Khaybar's story

Khaybar

55-year-old Khaybar lives in a small village in the Kurigram district of Bangladesh with his wife and two sons.

The family reside in a tin-shed house with over half an acre of cultivable land.

Khaybar first noticed symptoms of leprosy two and a half years ago. Over time, he grew increasingly weak and became unable to work effectively. He initially sought treatment from various private clinics but despite spending a significant amount of money, his condition did not improve.

In autumn 2024, Lepra’s Proyash project led a screening campaign in Khaybar’s village where it was suspected that he had leprosy. Afraid of rejection within the community, Khaybar was hesitant to disclose his condition to anyone outside of his immediate family.

Referred to a local health centre, Khaybar was officially diagnosed and began a course of multidrug therapy (MDT).

After starting treatment, Khaybar noticed a significant improvement in his health. His energy levels increased, and he regained his ability to work and provide for his family. He now feels healthier, more positive, and hopeful about his future.

Reflecting on his diagnosis, Khaybar says:

“If the Proyash project had not conducted screening in my village, I would have had to spend more money and perhaps lose my only piece of land.”

Khaybar’s journey from isolation to regaining his health and confidence is a testament to the importance of awareness, proper diagnosis, and timely treatment.

In partnership with Effect Hope, the Proyash project aims to improve access to quality healthcare, alongside strengthening active case-finding and services for people affected and at risk of leprosy.
