Kashi Ram

A labourer and the primary provider for his family of seven, 35-year-old Kashi Ram lives in Madhya Pradesh, India.

A year ago, he noticed redness on his face and worryingly he started to lose sensation in his left hand and foot. The loss of mobility made it difficult for him to work and earn a living.

Kashi Ram’s deteriorating condition caused a great deal of uncertainty about his family’s future. The inability to fulfil his family’s needs took a toll on his emotional health. His self-esteem diminished as he felt powerless to support his loved ones, causing anxiety and depression.

Due to a lack of awareness about leprosy, people in his community avoided him, fearing transmission. This social isolation worsened his sense of helplessness and loneliness.

At great expense, Kashi Ram sought help from traditional healers, but his condition did not improve. Referred to the local hospital, Kashi was diagnosed with leprosy, given free multidrug therapy treatment, and encouraged to attend a local Self-Support Group (SSG).

Through the SSG, Kashi Ram learnt self-care practices to aid the healing of any wounds and prevent ulcers from forming. He was issued with a self-care kit and a pair of custom-made protective shoes to enable him to walk more comfortably and protect his feet from further injuries.

To aid his financial situation, Kashi Ram was given assistance to apply for any eligible benefits, and birth certificates to facilitate his children’s school admission.

The SSG raised awareness of leprosy in the local community helping to reduce prejudice and discrimination.

With the support of the SSG and community intervention, Kashi Ram has made significant progress in managing his condition and reintegrating into society. Despite ongoing challenges, his determination to improve his life continues to inspire those around him.
