In 1981, he noticed patches of skin without sensation on his hand and body. He sought advice from many doctors, but none officially diagnosed leprosy.
Three years later, Jahangir was officially diagnosed at a health clinic. Due to the delay in his diagnosis, he had developed a serious ulcer and required surgery on a hand and foot.
Lepra staff explained the importance of self-care to Jahangir. He now practices the techniques twice daily and wears a pair of protective sandals to prevent any further ulcers or injuries.
Jahangir’s children were born after his diagnosis and have all remained well. Most of his friends and family were supportive and they helped him overcome the prejudice he experienced from others. Jahangir is proud of the understanding attitude of those closest to him.
“Only our conscious effort can prevent this disease.”
