The following real-life story details domestic abuse.
Due to a late diagnosis of leprosy, Hira developed disabilities in her hands, leaving her unable to continue working as a labourer and making everyday tasks a difficulty.
As Hia Bai’s health deteriorated, her husband’s alcohol addiction and gambling consumed their meagre earnings. Hira Bai faced neglect and abuse from her husband. Left to raise her children alone, she became emotionally drained and mentally fragile.
The disability of her hands meant that Hia Bai was the subject of discrimination; neighbours distanced themselves and employers deemed her ‘unfit for work’. The cruel judgment of the community pushed her into loneliness and despair.
Hira Bai sought treatment at a local hospital where she was prescribed a course of Multidrug Therapy (MDT) but due to side effects she did not complete it. She resorted to private treatment, but this proved futile, offering no relief and further draining her finances.
Identified by a health activist, Hira Bai’s plight came to the attention of the block coordinator of a Self-Support Group (SSG). Initially reluctant to share her struggles or join the SSG, Hira Bai gradually spoke openly through the coordinator’s persistent and compassionate approach.
Through attending the SSG, Hira Bai connected with others facing similar challenges, learnt self-care techniques, and gained awareness of her rights. After discovering she was lacking the documents and a bank account required to access government benefits, the block coordinator advocated tirelessly on her behalf to resolve this issue and supported her disability certificate application granting her a monthly pension, providing much-needed financial relief.
Family counselling sessions were arranged which emphasised the importance of shared responsibility and compassion. Gradually, Hira Bai’s husband began to acknowledge her struggles, laying the groundwork for a more supportive environment at home.
Active participation in SSG meetings has given Hira Bai a supportive community that values her courage and resilience. She now has the strength to face societal stigma.
With newfound confidence, Hira Bai resumed MDT under careful supervision, leading to a gradual improvement in her health and preventing the disease from worsening.
Hira Bai’s story is one of remarkable transformation. Her journey from isolation and despair to recovery and empowerment demonstrates the profound impact of persistence, community support, and compassionate intervention. Today, Hira Bai stands as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to overcome even the most daunting challenges with courage and determination.
