43-year-old Birju lives with her husband in a remote village in India’s Jamui District.
When Birju first developed discoloured patches of skin, she was unaware that this was a symptom of leprosy.
Her condition came to light during a local health outreach activity of Lepra's ASPIRE project in partnership with global health charity, Effect Hope. It was then that she was diagnosed and immediately began a course of multidrug therapy. With regular medication, Birju’s condition steadily improved.
When Birju was first diagnosed, her husband was afraid to go out into the community for fear of prejudice but as his wife’s condition improved, he began to socialise again.
Many women like Birju living in remote communities struggle to access healthcare which amplifies the importance of outreach activities in finding cases early and reducing transmission.
Birju’s journey is a reminder that recovery often begins with awareness and is sustained by compassion. Her progress reflects the strength of community health efforts and the resilience of individuals who, with the right support, rebuild their lives.
