In 2012, Astan noticed several discoloured skin patches appearing on his body. Initially, he spent a large amount of money on various traditional treatments, but these proved futile. Although the patches didn’t itch or hurt, he became very worried when he started losing strength in his arms and legs and experienced numbness. He wasn’t aware that these were symptoms of leprosy. Eventually, he discovered that such conditions were treated at the local health centre where he was eventually diagnosed and began a course of multidrug therapy (MDT).

Due to his diagnosis, no one wanted to hire him, and other workers refused to work alongside him. Astan’s health deteriorated, no longer able to continue farming he took on a lower-paid job as a van-puller until his conditioned worsened and he could no longer work. This led to severe financial hardship, and mistreatment from even his closest family. Maintaining their distance from him, they no longer cared for him or even provided him with proper food and medicine. Shunned by his neighbours, he was barred from attending social functions. The constant negative comments and social isolation left him emotionally distressed.
Astan’s turning point came in 2023, when staff from Lepra’s UPLIFT Project encouraged him to attend a Community Based Group. He learnt self-care methods to properly manage his wounds and was provided with custom-made protective footwear which significantly improved his health. With the project’s support, Astan was able to resume his work as a van-puller, ensuring a source of income for his family.
Astan now uses his knowledge to help others affected by encouraging them to take proper care of themselves. Recognisng his potential, Lepra supported Astan to become a Community Based Group leader and later the Vice President of the Natore District Federation.
Astan actively supports other people affected by leprosy. If he notices people with symptoms of leprosy, he drives them to the local health centre or hospital for treatment. His advocacy role has reduced stigma and increased community awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.
“Though I lost my mobility because of leprosy, I am determined to ensure no one else experiences the impact as I did, or lives a life of neglect. As a CBG leader, I work tirelessly for the development of people with leprosy and disabilities. I diligently practice self-care using the kits provided and raise awareness in my community."
The UPLIFT Project aims to unlock the potential of people affected by leprosy and NTDs by promoting community-based care and self-help practices through community-based groups. The project strengthens health systems, promotes sustainable care, and builds community leadership. Read more about the Uplift Project here.
