Sasakawa Leprosy Initiative Young Scholar Programme

26 May 2026

A new two-year programme is supporting people affected by leprosy to develop their leadership skills, gain financial autonomy and become pivotal players in shaping solutions within their communities.

People affected by leprosy between the ages of 18 and 35 were encouraged to apply to the scheme which aims to develop role models to foster future leaders who will impact local communities and beyond.

The Sasakawa Leprosy Initiative Young Scholar Programme is expected to play a critical role in nurturing the next generation of community leaders by placing meaningful participation, ownership, and leadership at its core. Rather than positioning scholars as passive recipients of training, the programme will treat them as active partners and future decision-makers who are central to shaping solutions within their own communities.
