The ILC is one of the most significant global events addressing current research, treatment, and understanding of leprosy. The ILC brings together health professionals, researchers, policymakers, and representatives from affected communities worldwide to discuss the latest developments in the field of leprosy.
Maria del Mar Marais (Senior Programme Manager, Lepra) and Md. Waheduzzaman Polu (Programme Manager, Lepra Bangaldesh) presented an advocacy session highlighting the lack of research around childhood experiences of leprosy-related stigma and discrimination. The presentation was co-presented by Taslima Akter, who since recovering from leprosy herself has dedicated her life to standing up for the rights of people affected. A highly respected community figure, Taslima is the first female Chair of the Bogura Foundation for people affected by leprosy, and member of the ILEP advisory panel.
Professor Diana Lockwood (Trustee-Observer, Lepra UK) presented on the New Face for Leprosy project - a photographic exhibition by Tom Bradley which challenges the myths and perceptions of leprosy. Tom showcased the exhibition in person at the ILC, presenting the experiences of people photographed.
Diana also presented on the use of Thalidomide for leprosy reaction management and advocated for the need of new treatment regimes.
Geoff Warne (CEO International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations) provided an update on the progress of Lepra's UPLIFT project in partnership with Effect Hope and the German Leprosy and TB Relief Association.
"We were proud to share research and voices at this year's ILC."
