A free storytelling session bringing the story of Maria’s Island to life.
Written by Victoria Hislop, illustrated by Gill Smith and published by Walker Books, Maria's Island is a compelling story for KS2 and KS3 students which follows a family impacted by leprosy, a disease which is often misunderstood. The book examines the challenges they face and how they overcome them.
Join Lepra historian, Irene Allen, for a free children's storytelling session. Irene will explore the key themes explored in the book such as prejudice, isolation, discrimination, and most importantly, hope.

Irene Allen worked for Lepra for 38 years, and during that time developed a passion for preserving the charity’s rich history.
Throughout her career, Irene worked alongside many influential people from across the organisation during this pivotal time, gaining incredible insight into the charity’s many accomplishments.
I have had many wonderful experiences with Lepra, including the opportunity to travel overseas and meet our staff and colleagues in India, Bangladesh, and Nigeria.
