Job Description

Purpose

Raise Lepra’s profile by increasing awareness and improving engagement with supporters.

Support the smooth running of the communications team, increasing the impact of Lepra through a range of communication channels, building trust with our audiences.

The post holder will set professional standards and consistency in our messaging ensuring that all communication reflects the values of the charity.

Main responsibilities

The primary functions of the Communications Lead are as follows:

•    Take responsibility for written communications including Lepra News, Leprosy Review, PR and Social Media content
•    Work closely across Lepra to deliver a range of appropriate communication strategies to optimise the supporter journey
•    Work collaboratively with overseas colleagues to support the communication needs of the wider Lepra organisation

Key Objectives

•    Our communications will reach an average of 1M people per month with key messages which will drive donations and support
•    Deliver coordinated, integrated communication campaigns with India and Bangladesh
•    Support Programmes, both in the UK and overseas, with editing specialist articles for the academic press and generating publicity from them
•    Publish impact and outcome data each quarter
•    Monthly reporting using a Communications Dashboard
•    Responsible for communications functions, on and offline, advising on content and copy and ensuring compliance and legality (DMA, ASA etc.)
•    Maximise the social capital available to Lepra
 

Key tasks

•    To gain knowledge of, and keep up-to-date with, Lepra’s work overseas and in the International Development arena to support good communications across all mediums
•    Lead on PR, proactively developing media opportunities, producing compelling and newsworthy articles, press releases, website content and social media content
•    Drive our key messaging through all on and offline communications
•    Develop the campaigning element of our communications, including developing key spokespeople and Ambassador communications
•    Keep up to date with law or changes affecting communication practice, raising concerns or making recommendations to the Director of Fundraising and Communications as appropriate
•    Develop the use of Advantage (CRM) ensuring Lepra’s policies and practices are adhered to including data protection. To record all relevant information promptly.
•    Practical examples will include but are not limited to:
o    Digital content creation (e.g., recording and editing for audio and visual)
o    Creating media lists, media sell ins, logging media coverage and responding to enquiries from journalists
o    Proofreading articles and drafting pitches to journalists
o    Managing website content
o    Planning and managing the delivery of digital and live events
o    Planning and delivering a social media campaign
o    Identifying target stakeholders to invite to various events
o    Producing shareable content for our range of digital channels (including event videos, interviews) - covering recording, editing, audio content and sound design
o    Support the delivery of high quality and effective live and digital events

Person specification Communications Lead

Essential
•    Educated to A level or NVQ3 level or equivalent experience

Desirable
•    Institute of Fundraising Certificate in Fundraising
•    NCJT Qualification

Experience
•    Proven writing and editorial ability
•    Conceptualising and developing creative and compelling stories and campaigns for variety of audiences and platforms
•    Successfully initiating, selling in stories and maintaining strong media relationships
•    Creating multi-media communications materials, including graphics and films, and distributing effectively
•    Managing integrated digital communications and social media platforms
•    Experience of using a CRM database, ideally Advantage

Skills
•    Impeccable copywriting and proofreading skills
•    Solid knowledge of website analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics).
•    Understanding of video and multimedia techniques within communications and experience of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere Pro
•    Proven ability to maintain website content
•    Proven ability to manage both live and digital events
•    Excellent IT skills, relevant computer packages including Microsoft applications

Further information:
This post is full-time and based in our Colchester office, there will be a requirement to attend out of hours events or media on-call duties, and the ability to travel in the UK (and occasionally overseas) is required.
