Victoria Hislop has been an ambassador for Lepra for many years. On Wednesday 16th September three representatives of Lepra were lucky enough to be invited to attend the 10th anniversary celebration of her award winning book ‘The Island’.

Held at Headline Publishing Group’s offices in London, we were greeted with popcorn as we took our seats to watch the only UK screening of the first episode of the smash hit Greek television series ‘THE ISLAND’, based on the book.

We were then taken to the roof terrace where we were treated to traditional Greek food and a chance to mingle with other fans and most importantly the author herself.

In the final part of the event, there was a Q&A session hosted by journalist Rosie Goldsmith, here Victoria explained her passion and inspiration for writing the novel: “On Spinalonga, I felt the spirit of the people who lived there. It was as if they’d just gone out and left something behind... It was implanted in me that I had to write this story. It shows how people survive difficulty.”
