Between the 13th and 19th of May, here at Lepra we declared it Socks and Sandals week.

On this week we encouraged individuals to make a statement with their footwear by wearing eye-catching socks and sandals. The more colourful and wackier the socks, the better!

We would like to thank everyone who took part in our socks and sandals week. Just by taking your photos and sharing on social media you are a big part of spreading awareness that leprosy still exists, affecting the lives of people every day, but is curable.

Why socks and sandals?

The reasoning behind our whimsical themed week is to highlight one of the ways in which we can provide aid. One of the effects of leprosy is that it often causes nerve damage in the feet, leading people to be susceptible to injuries and ulcers.

We provide protective, tailor-made, sandals to help people to walk comfortably and without fear of possible injury.

More importantly, these sandals cost just £3 to make and can be of great help in children returning to school and adults rebuilding their lives. Last year, more than 30,000 pairs of protective shoes were provided to people with leprosy and lymphatic filariasis. With more people getting involved in our fundraising and campaigns such as socks and sandals week, with your help we can provide more this year.
